About the Makahiki

The Makahiki is an annual event of the Aloha Council and is the oldest Scouting show in the United States of America. The first Makahiki was held in 1911 at Camp Bluegum in Aiea Heights, one year after Scouting arrived in the Hawaiian Islands.

Since its 104 year existence, the Aloha Council Makahiki has found its way to different locations on Oahu. The Old Honolulu Stadium in Makiki, the Neal Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Sand Island Beach Park in Honolulu, and currently at Ala Moana Regional Park in Honolulu.

This year’s event is sure to be one of the best and fun Makahiki’s. This year’s theme is “Get Grit.” The main focus of this year’s Makahiki is to showcase Grit and perseverance. That is what the Scouting program does best by teaching Scouts to never give up, keep trying and to do your best.

We are also working with different community businesses and groups to help showcase community involvement like HECO, POP Fishing and Marine, Hawaii Bicycling League, DLNR, and the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center.

Our Scouts will be competing in a wide variety of Scout Skill competitions throughout the day. Various branches of the military will be out showcasing some of their equipment and K-9 units as well as our very own First Responders.

We will also have live entertainment on center stage and lots of food vendors. This year’s set up will be the same as last year with Boy Scout and Cub Scout booths mixed together focusing on themes such as Get Grit, Health and Fitness, Scout Skills, and Kids Zone.
